Webcam Test

Check your camera before a call or a stream: see yourself live, with the real resolution and the frame rate your camera actually delivers.

Your browser will ask for camera access. The video stays on your device: nothing is recorded or sent.

How to test your webcam

  1. Press Start webcam test and allow camera access when your browser asks.
  2. You should see yourself within a second. The panel shows the resolution you really get, the frame rate (FPS) measured live and the image shape.
  3. Several cameras? Pick one in the Camera menu. Try a higher Quality to see the best your camera can do.
  4. Take a photo to check sharpness and colors, or go full screen.

Before a call, also check that people can hear you with the mic test.

What do resolution and FPS mean?

  • Resolution is the size of the image: 1280 × 720 is HD (720p), 1920 × 1080 is Full HD (1080p). Most laptop cameras give 720p; good external webcams give 1080p or more.
  • FPS (frames per second) is how smooth the video is. 30 FPS is normal for calls; 60 FPS is smoother for streaming. In a dark room, many webcams slow down to 15 FPS to get more light: turning on a lamp often doubles the frame rate.

This test shows what the camera really delivers to your browser, not what is printed on the box. Video call apps may then lower the quality depending on your connection.

Webcam not working? Quick fixes

  1. Allow access. Click the lock or camera icon next to the address bar, set Camera to “Allow”, then reload.
  2. Close other apps that use the camera (Zoom, Teams, Discord, OBS, the Camera app): on Windows, only one app can use it at a time.
  3. Check the privacy shutter or the camera key (often F8 or F10 with a camera icon) on laptops.
  4. Check system settings. Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Your browser must be allowed.
  5. Unplug and plug back a USB webcam, ideally directly into the computer rather than a hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is my camera data sent anywhere?

No. The test runs entirely inside your browser. Nothing is recorded, stored on a server or sent to us.

Why is my image mirrored?

Showing your image like a mirror feels natural, so most apps do it for your own preview. The people you call see you the right way round. Untick “Mirror” to see what they see.

Why is my webcam image dark or choppy?

Webcams need light. In a dim room they lower the frame rate and add noise. Face a window or a lamp, and avoid having a bright light behind you.

Does this work on phones?

Yes. On a phone you can switch between the front and back cameras in the Camera menu.
